Capricorn Parents

One of the interesting things about Capricorns is that while they make for mature, stuffy old-manish children, the older they get, the more they loosen up.  While a teenaged Capricorn may have the same affinity for golf and khaki as the one in his eighties, the difference is that the old man doesn't seem out of place in this role.  Capricorns in their prime parenting age are in a good place.  Often labeled as a workaholic, Capricorn Dad is usually the bread-winner.  Capricorn Mom is not likely to be without employment.  If she is a stay-at-home-mother, she runs the household much like a business--schedules, routines, expense reports, etc.  Their conservative spending habits, appreciation for manners, and talent for future-planning are all assets in parenting.  The long-term process of a Capricorn loosening up as a child grows older is a lovely thing to see.  This is not to say that by the time their kids leave the nest, Capricorn is sliding down a stripper pole or throwing money away at a casino.  They will probably still be sticklers for rules and continue to browse the sale ads, but he's learned to lose the tie on the weekends and she isn't afraid to splurge on a fun vacation.

Pros:  Capricorns are ardent savers and hard workers.  Families led by a Capricorn are financially stable.  Children will be well-mannered and aware of their boundaries.  This parent's devotion is unwavering. 

Cons:  Though not as known for being stubborn as fellow Earth Sign, Taurus, Capricorn is secretly more stubborn and set in his ways.  The difference is that he's only this way when it really matters, not just for the sake of being stubborn, like Taurus.  The aforementioned Capricorn workaholic-type is at risk of neglecting family issues if she puts her career first.  

Sagittarius Parents

Sagittarius parents are known for their adventurous spirit and ability to mirror a child's energetic, impulsive attitude.  Like children, many Sadges haven't yet developed the ability to think before they speak.  This translates to giving children the space and freedom to express themselves openly and honestly.  Children with Sagittarius mom or dad are never chastised for speaking their minds.  Sagittarius is often interested in science, philosophy, and nature which means chemistry sets, camping trips, and lots of adrenaline-drenched adventures for the family--that is, if this Sagittarius parent isn't bogged down with work all the time.  Balancing work with play is something every Sadge parent should pay attention to.

Pros:  Enough energy to romp around all day and still be up early to whip up a nutritious breakfast for all,  a youthful curiosity that makes this parent seem young at any age,  and an abundance of excitement and positivity to encourage a child with.

Cons:  Unless he/she's been able to overcome a sometimes offensive outspokenness, this parent can be too harsh for sensitive, reclusive children.  This sign is known for burning the candle at both ends, so this parent may be at risk of missing out on the less obvious nuances of a kid's childhood.

Aquarius Parents

When it comes to parenting, as with anything else, Aquarius has an unconventional style that can evolve in many different ways.  Whether it's by raising the family in a commune or just keeping a funky set of traditions alive, Aquarius parents refuse to be included with the norm.  Known for knowing at least a little about anything, Aquarius Mom and Dad are knowledge-hoarders that place a heavy emphasis on learning.  Many Aquarians take pride in their uniqueness and will celebrate the quirks and individuality of their children as well.  Though they're black sheep, Aquarius parents fit in just fine at PTA meetings and softball practice because they're generally friendly people with positive energy.  While they may give their children the freedom to make up their own minds, topics like politics, religion, and current events will not escape domestic discourse.  Game night is a great tradition to have in an Aquarius household, being that they are masters of trivia and spelling games like Scrabble.

Pros:  A child's questions will never go unanswered.  A strong sense of identity is able to develop in the child.

Cons:  The progressive activist spirit in Aquarius may leave the domestic realm neglected at times.  A child that needs structure and routine may be lost with this breezy sign.

Cancer Parents

The parents of the zodiac, Cancers are natural nurturers.  Unless they had parents who opposed the idea, most Cancers were likely to grow up with pets.  A Cancer's connection to an animal is often stronger than any other sign's--probably because animals are viewed as innocent, vulnerable things that need care.  A Cancer can't resist.  As parents, Cancers have a fantastic ability to become psychically connected to their children and know exactly what they need and how they feel.  If she's not careful, Cancer can become overly possessive of her offspring.  Since she is more nostalgic than any other sign and quite sensitive, Cancer Mother is likely to keep the first tooth her son loses until it turns to dust and Cancer Father will keep that drawing his daughter made in his wallet for the rest of his life.

Pros:  Likely to be well-read on parenting and able to put the child's best interest first, will keep good record of childhood (i.e. scrapbooks, journals, etc.), will create a very comfortable home/kingdom for the family

Cons:  This is a moody parent that needs to be left alone when his/her mood swings low.  Also, Cancer parents may have trouble giving their children the freedom to fail, be hurt, or expand far away on their own.

Scorpio Parents

The Scorpio parent is naturally in tune with his or her children.  With the ability to know what people are thinking and feeling without being told, Scorpio parents can anticipate their child's needs and moods effectively.  Scorpio's possessive and protective nature may create a problem when it comes to giving children a sense of freedom and space, though this problem is easily corrected if the parent is able to identify it and commit to changing (Scorpio's commitment is unshakable).  Since Scorps are no strangers to playing mind games, it's no surprise to find one using reverse psychology or some other mental manipulation to direct children.  While Scorpio mom and dad understand a child's need for secrets, dishonesty is not tolerated.  Kids with a Scorpio parent should always let their parents know where they are, when they'll be back, and who they'll be with--and stick to the plan.  Nothing gets past Scorpio mom or dad.  Often black-and-white thinkers (due to an intensity of feeling), Scorpio parents often project their own interests, dreams, and aspirations onto their children.

Pros:  Strong-willed and able to cut through any obstacle, able to be intensely supportive of child's pursuits, unique ability to understand their children.

Cons:  May be invasive to child's privacy, risk of forcing child to share parent's interests, if the Scorpio parent isn't in a stable relationship, risk of drama in personal life interfering with ability to uphold parental responsibility.

Virgo Parents

Virgo parents tend to have orderly, clean homes if possible (Good luck, Virgo, if you've made a partnership with a Gemini or have a Pisces or Aquarius child, for example).  The grocery store isn't visited without a list and chores are scheduled.  When you find a messy Virgo home, you can at least count on Virgo to know the exact order of each mess and where to find anything you could possibly need.  These parents take an active interest in their children and are easy to make proud.  While both parents are worrisome and critical, Virgo Mom takes the cake.  Having children can be extra enlightening to the often cautious, logical, and structured Virgo.

Pros for having a Virgo parent:  Your closets, drawers, and... life will always be organized.  You'll learn at an early age how to make your allowance really last.  You have a live-in math tutor.

Cons for having a Virgo parent:  These parents are often overly critical and discerning to a fault.  Children who don't respond well to structure may feel stifled or confined.  While Virgo parents take great pride in the accomplishments of their offspring, when it comes time for them to leave the nest, letting go is a crippling challenge.

Taurus Parents

The biggest thing that comes to mind when I consider Taurus parents is the idea of structure.  These are the mothers and fathers that provide structure/stability and routine/rules for their kids.  They're also likely to impose epicurean and elitist tastes on their offspring--designer baby clothes, only the best in electronics, and picky-eating is acceptable.  Unfortunately for manipulative signs (Libra, Scorpio) or children under a sign that is strong-willed (Leo, Aries, Taurus, Capricorn), Taurus Mom and Dad won't budge when a decision has been reached.  No extended curfews or exceptions to the household rules.

Pros: Excellent ability to form habits, predictability gives child a sense of security, likely to be a good bread-winner (unless you're a lazy Taurus... which isn't uncommon).

Cons:  Black-and-white thinking, non-intuitive, potential for too many hours put in at work.

Leo Parents

Parenting comes naturally to Leo.  Just as a lion rules the jungle, Leo is comfortable directing in the home.  With high standards for themselves, Leos are able to set the bar high for their children and give lots of direction on how to achieve their goals.  Always prepared, Leo mothers never fail to figure out a solution to any problem.  There isn't anything a Leo dad can't fix.  Leo's are likely to push their children into participating in competitive activities like sports and will surely be the loudest fan in the stands.  Winning is important to Leo, but they are also able to accept loss gracefully.

Pros:  Generous, extravagant, strong-willed, pushes child to excel.

Cons:  Hot-tempered, controlling, risk of unrealistic expectations for child.

Values Learned from Leo Parent:  Independence, efficiency, pride in oneself.

How to Spot Them in a Crowd:  The mom pulling an itinerary for the day out of her large purse full of snacks, band-aids, quarters, and whatever else anyone might need.  The dad forcing everyone to admire  wallet photos of his kids.

The Next Astrotreat Installment: Parents

For my next set of treats, I'm going to give a quick look at each astrological sign in terms of parenting style.  This should be fun for us to see how our own parent-figures measure up.  For those of us with children, we may be enlightened a little about ourselves.  For those of us without,  let's dream a little of our potential.

SAGITTARIUS CHALLENGE

I challenge Sagittarius to speak in monotone all day long.  Extra points for not injuring yourself in an extreme adventure (i.e. skydiving, white water rafting, bungee jumping).

LIBRA CHALLENGE

I challenge Libra to hang out alone for two whole days doing antisocial things.  Extra points for hanging out with someone you think is ugly when you're done.

CANCER CHALLENGE

I challenge Cancer to find that box of special junk you keep because it has sentimental value and throw it away.  Extra points if you don't talk to your mother for a week.

GEMINI CHALLENGE

I challenge Geminis to stand in a long line without shifting their weight, tapping their foot, drumming their fingers, or texting.  Extra points for not telling a long story to the person in front of you.

LEO CHALLENGE

I challenge Leo to get through 24 hours without something going wrong.  Extra points for not having a bigger to-do list than anyone else or for not thinking, "I'll have to do that myself if I want it done right."

SCORPIO CHALLENGE

If someone is texting right next to you, Scorpio, I challenge you not to try and see what they're saying.  You get extra points if the thought of sex only pops into your head a hundred times today.

CAPRICORN CHALLENGE

I challenge you not to take a free sample at the grocery store.  Extra points if you don't enter the sweepstakes at the check-out counter.

TAURUS CHALLENGE

 I challenge you to join a person you don't respect for dinner and let that person order for you.  Extra points if you let him/her drive and choose the music you listen to.

VIRGO CHALLENGE

Virgo, when someone goes in your home for the first time and picks up a nicknack or picture frame to admire it, I challenge you not to adjust its position after they set it back down.  Double points for wearing a wrinkled shirt to work.

ARIES CHALLENGE

I challenge you to lose next time you play a board game.  Double points for not thinking the whole time about how you would totally win if you weren't trying to prove me wrong.

AQUARIUS CHALLENGE

I challenge you, Aquarius, to quiet your mind for 5 consecutive seconds.  Extra points if you don't vote in the next presidential election.  Anyone with Mercury in Aquarius is included in the challenge.

Astro Challenge

Just for fun, and kind of jokingly, I'm going to give each sign a challenge I don't think they can complete.  I'll start with the nice guy who often takes his time and indifferently finishes last, Pisces.

PISCES CHALLENGE:

I challenge you to watch an episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" by yourself without shedding a tear.  If you're one of the few that has an un-sappy Moon sign (like Aries or Capricorn, for example), you're exempt.  You get extra points if your Moon is in Cancer or a commercial for the Humane Society airs during your session.

I was honored to guest-blog for Estrofests (http://estrofests.blogspot.com) and I thought I'd post my entry here too.  It's just a fun look at the possible drinking styles for the female version of each sign...

Aries: Known for her cool, classic, and aggressive nature, Aries likes a drink that’s strong and to the point. Vodka Martini, dry... or anything else a spy might be seen drinking. If you challenge her to a drinking contest, she’ll drink the most.

Taurus: Famous for her epicurean, expensive taste, the Taurus woman is expected to have a fancy, sensuous drink (a rare meritage, a single-barrel scotch, a Godiva martini). If she’s drinking something cheap, it’s because she can’t afford her habit. Even then, she’ll be adamant about which cheap beer is best.

Gemini: The sign with the shortest attention span is Gemini. Make her a drink that’s trendy, has a story behind it, and doesn’t take long to make (Tom Collins, for example). In light of the twins, make it a double. Sip slowly, though, because this chatty two-headed beast loves to talk.

Cancer: The sign most associated with comfort and nostalgia is Cancer. It’s best to let this moody crab choose the location, but don’t be surprised if she wants you to just come over to her place. A Sea Breeze Cocktail suits her well.

Leo: Lions don’t mind the spotlight and love attention-grabbing drinks. Order her something with an umbrella or big chunk of fruit stuck on the glass. Think Jungle Juice for this Lion. Let her give you advice--better yet, let her map out an entire plan of action to tackle your issues.

Virgo: Known for her sense of order and cleanliness, Virgo can appreciate a drink that’s neat (gin and tonic) but be careful. She’s symbolized by the virgin and has lots of chaste energy bursting at the seams. She might start with something simple like a margarita or a modest glass of wine, but give her another drink or two and she’s ready for body shots and karaoke.

Libra: Party girl! Start her with a Bloody Mary to cure her hangover from the night before. She’ll drink what’s on special because it’s more about volume, not flavor for her. She’ll flirt with the bartender and make lots of trips to the bathroom, batting her [lovely] eyelashes at strangers on the way.

Scorpio: Scorpios can’t help but be sexy, secretive, and smoldering. If there was a drink with actual blood in it, Scorpio would have it. Depending on the bar you’re in, she’ll order a fitting drink. A cowboy bar? Bud Light straight from the bottle. Italian bistro? Martini or Bellini. Night club? Something related to sex. Flirtini. Sex on the Beach. Slam those drinks and it will be sex in the bathroom.

Sagittarius: This girl likes to push the limits. If she’s out drinking, she’s out to find an adventure. She isn’t picky, but drinks with herbs muddled in them (mojito) always appeal because of her attraction to nature. She also likes any drink that promises a special effect--the hallucinatory effects of wormwood in absinthe, for example.

Capricorn: This is your conservative friend. She doesn't like to spend money, but she will if it means getting a new friend - because it's who you know that matters in the end, right? Or she'll just stick to beer. 

Aquarius: You can't predict a drink for this original personality. The only thing you can count on is that it won’t be conventional. If it’s beer, it’s one no one ever orders. If it’s a margarita, it’s with Tuaca added. Aquarius often orders a drink to honor her favorite author - for example, a mojito like Ernest Hemingway or a mint julep in memory of Tennessee Williams.

Pisces: If she seems a little tipsy already, it’s probably because she was drinking by herself at the bar next door before she met up. Don’t let her drive and make sure she has condoms if she’s talking to some guy at the table next to you. If she’s a rare Pisces who has her act together, she’ll appreciate a complex drink that surprises her palette like a grapefruit pomegranate martini with a slice of cucumber floating in it.

Nick (sagittarius)

Zak (gemini)

Geminis are the great multi-taskers of the zodiac.  They also have the shortest attention span (possibly rivaled by an uninterested Aries or Taurus) so the best way to coax a Gemini into focusing is to give him more than one task to handle at a time.  

I guessed a couple!

Tonight, at work, I served a couple with a two-year-old son.  Both parents were very attentive and extremely prepared.  The mom had all kinds of food and activities to occupy the little guy.  He seemed like he could be a handful, but I never once had to assist the parents.  I rarely encounter families like this.  Usually parents are happy to have their child's food rushed, a plate of orange slices offered, or a blob of pizza dough for him to play with.  When the dad was in the bathroom, I asked the mom, "What is your sign?  I rarely wait on parents that are this prepared with their children.  I admire how much you've planned ahead."  She then invited me to guess her sign.  I said I thought she was either a Leo or a Virgo.  She laughed and said, "I'm a Virgo and my husband is a Leo.  So is my son."

I'm not sure if it's my Piscean intuition or the fruits of my labor as an astrologer, but it was pretty exciting to guess correctly.

Virgo and Leo are both signs that are known for being prepared for anything (excluding emotional breakdowns or spontaneous adventure-seeking from counterparts, of course).

nameless old lady (aries)

I waited on a couple of older ladies this morning who were in for brunch.  They were a saucy duo that I got to joke around with and become comfortable with.  Each time I approached to see if they needed anything, I would just keep walking because they were in a seemingly intense conversation.  Finally, their plates were empty and I had to interrupt to ask about dessert and the bill.  I stepped up to the table and waited while she finished her sentence, feeling sort of ignored, when she looked at me and in her next breath asked, "Cindy, are you afraid of us?" I should note that she looked hopeful that I would say yes, as if she's used to intimidating strangers.

Aries are known for being direct, sometimes aloof, and often aggressive.  This is part of why, I think, Aries is considered to be a "masculine" sign.  This is not to say that there are no feminine Aries out there.  Throw a little Pisces in their moon, give them rising Libra, and let Mars be ruled by Cancer or something like that, and you could end up with a pretty dreamy, passive, and illusive Aries.  The possibilities are endless.

Cancers are known for retreating into their "shells" when put on the spot, prodded at, or even just when bothered.

Jason (taurus)

Jason: "Usually."

Taurus, like the other earth signs, is known for being habitual.  If no schedule influenced his schedule, he would likely rise at the same exact hour every day.

Greg (leo)

In response to why he was able to get bread first, before a smaller gemini:  "You know why I got to get mine first?  Because I'm bigger."  

Leo will abuse his power from time to time.

Tonia (gemini)

Geminis are known for being excellent communicators, partaking in all forms of communication, and for working well with technological advances and trends.

Aries like to be in charge like kings and queens of everything.  They enjoy being revered as the best.

Sagittarius people will always seek adventure and act impulsively.  An adrenaline rush or some kind of excitement is the perfect prescription for a bummed out man-beast.

Scorpios are known for being secretive.  They tend to collect secrets because others sense that a Scorpio will never tell.  The inner detective inside every Scorp loves to collect data.

Cancer is one of a handful of signs (pisces, scorpio, sometimes aquarius) that is known for having an extremely strong intuition and ability to pick on vibes.

Cancers are known for their mood swings.  It's best not to prod when you see that a cancer is down or angry.  Just give them their space.  They'll come back around on their own.

Leos love to compete, but for the act of competition.  While they love to win, they also like to see everyone win in some way.  Leos don't cheat.  They work to include everyone in the game and give credit where it's deserved.  They are best at leading.  They prefer to be in control.
